Rhynchophorus ferrugineus
Rhynchophorus ferrugineus is a flying insect, which is native to the tropical areas of Asia and Oceania. As the name suggests, it has a red-orange colour and may be between 1,5 and 4,5 cm long. Since Spain (1993), Italy (2004) and Portugal (2007) has this weevil spread with the marketing of palm trees in Europe.
This beetle infects different types of palm trees, especially palms of the Canary Islands, the rare Washingtonia palm, causing significant damage that can lead to death of the palms. A palm tree is infested with all generations of the insect (egg / larvae / pupae / adult). The female lays 200-300 eggs at the base of the leaves or on the long tip. The larvae hatch within a few days and can be up to 5 cm in size. They feed inside the palm, forming "Galleries of cavities" which leads to destruction.
If the tree is left untreated, leads to death.
